Wulf, Horsham and Dover win during RaceSaver IMCA Sprint SuperNationals Finale

Wulf, Horsham and Dover win during RaceSaver IMCA Sprint SuperNationals Finale

By Greg Soukup

After falling to the weather Saturday night, the final night of the Precise Racing Products RaceSaver IMCA Sprint Super Nationals powered by NMC Cat Rental Store & Venom was completed Monday afternoon before a good-sized crowd.

All of the preliminary events were run without serious incident.

The first A Feature was for the Kaplan University Modifieds. The initial attempt at a start was called back when the 14J of Jeff Jones and Mike Densberger’s 81 came to a halt in turn 1. On the second attempt the 44 of Joe Spillman failed to take off and stopped at the top of turn 4 before going to the pits with a flat right front tire. The first lap that went into the record books saw Aaron Pella’s 3A, the 86 of Justin Wulf, Stacey Wilhelm in the 3W and Doug Deterding’s 13 out front. Chad Andersen passed Deterding on lap 2, putting the 8C in fourth. Deterding came to a halt in turn 2 two laps later. Andersen moved to third on the restart before giving the spot back to Wilhelm on lap 7. Roger Hadan moved to fourth on lap 9 in the #4. Just before the end Wulf passed Pella for the lead and held on for the victory.

This was Wulf’s first Eagle Raceway win since 2011. “I was running out of time, because I really wanted a win here this year. But, my luck finally changed and I got a good draw. I want to thank my wife, my mom and dad and Grandpa and Grandpa” stated Wulf. Wulf’s sponsors include Shocked by DSR, One Horse Saloon, Bottom Road Diesel, J & J Grading, Wrich Farms, Nelson Metal, Ken’s Smoke House, Traeger Grills, Wulf and Sons Farms and Volnek Welding.

Next up was the Sam’s Club Sport Compact A. Tim Horsham’s 3, the 8 of Sarah Cronin, RJ Maas in the 88X and Larry Cronin’s 30L were the initial top 4. Evan Hrabik spun the 19X in 3 & 4 on lap 3 for the first yellow. Mitchel Wachter put the 13M into fourth before giving up the spot to Kyle Owen’s 10K on lap 4. Maas passed Cronin on lap 7 but gave the position back before the lap finished. Maas got extremely loose on lap 12, falling back and allowing Wachter to move to third and Cole Krichau snagged fourth. From there to the finish the top 4 remained the same with Horsham winning, Cronin second, Wachter third and Krichau fourth.

This was Horsham’s first Sport Compact A Feature at Eagle and was his first win of any kind since a hobby stock victory in 1974. “This win was for all of us over 60. That was a beautiful track, and was perfect for my car. The straights were the smoothest that they have been all year. Thanks to my crew chief Steve and also to the Hansen team. I forgot my racing suit and they lent me one” said Horsham. Horsham’s sponsors include U Pull-it, Jerry’s Auto Service and 24 Hour Repair.

Then came the long-anticipated finale for the Precise Racing Products RaceSaver IMCA Sprint Cars powered by NMC Cat Rental Store & Venom. Jason Martin led the field at the end of the first circuit in his 5X with Tadd Holliman’s 45, the 4 of Jerry Hammock and Ryan Hall’s 79V in hot pursuit. Luke Cranston’s 20 slowed on lap 6 and headed pit-side with a flat right front. Hall took third on the restart and Tyler Thompson also passed Hammock the next lap. Hammock headed for the pits on lap 9. Chase Brewer looped the 99X in turn 4 for another caution period. Jack Dover cracked the top 4 on lap 15, putting the 4J into the position. 4 laps later Dover moved to third. Lap 22 saw another caution. Adam Gullion’s 91 stopped at the top of 3 & 4 on lap 25. Martin went extremely high on the restart, causing a melee behind him. Both Doug Lovegrove’s 1 and the 14 of Joey Danley ended up flipping in 1 & 2. Also involved were the 33G of RJ Johnson and the 11 of Justin Melton. That put Holliman out front, Dover second, Hall third and Thompson fourth. Dover grabbed the lead on the restart and John Ricketts put the 5R into fourth. Jason Howell spun the 44H at the bottom of turn 4 with 4 to go for the final caution of the event. Dover held on for the W, Holliman came home second, Hall third and Ricketts fourth.

Dover’s win came after starting the event in 19th. “I owe this win to Rick Bowers and all of the guys at Select Auto. And thanks to Mom and Dad for letting me use their engine again. I hit the right set-up for Garret, Michael and Alex to use. I knew that the key tonight would be set-up and tire management. That and I found the rubber first” related Dover.
