Holliman & Galusha win at night #1 of the RaceSaver IMCA Sprint SuperNationals

By Greg Soukup

Mother Nature failed twice to stop Night #1 of the RaceSaver IMCA Sprint Super Nationals, presented by Precise Racing, Venom Energy and NMC Cat Rental Store Friday evening at Eagle Raceway. After dumping over 5 inches of rain on the track in the days before, she allowed the first heat to be run. She made a last-ditch effort before the second heat could be run, raining for about 20 minutes.

As they had that morning and afternoon, Eagle’s track prep crew and the push trucks took to the high banks accompanied by Roger Hadan in the water truck and began saving the racing surface. It took over an hour, but their efforts provided a smooth and FAST track. This was evident when Luke Cranston in the 20 set a new track record for the Racesaver IMCA Sprints.

Brandon Horton ended up flipping the 1B in the D Feature after clipping the armco surrounding turns 3 & 4. In the C Feature, the 7 of Troy Severin went too high in turn 1 and flipped. In the same race, Tom Belsky rolled his #28 in turn 4. Then, in the B Feature, Richard Weers hit the wall and rolled in turn 4. Shortly after that, the 80 of Josh Hawkins struck the wall in turn 1 and flipped. None of the drivers was seriously injured.

The A Feature for the Precise Racing Products RaceSaver IMCA Sprint Cars saw Tadd Holliman’s 45, the 7K of Kyle Flodman, Mark VanDerHeiden in the 15V and the 97 of Brian Herbert out front at the end of the first lap. Matt Richards suffered a flat right front tire on lap 4 and nearly flipped as he hit the pit entrance. Tyler Thompson jumped into fourth on the restart and then moved the 48 into third before the end of the lap. Flodman climbed the right rear of Jason Becker’s 17B on lap 9 and ended up flipping violently down the backstretch. Flodman was not seriously injured. VanDerHeiden suffered a flat right rear tire in the melee and headed to the pits. That made the top 4 Holliman, Herbert, Thompson and the 9X of Jake Bubak. Clint Benson flipped the #100 in turns 1 & 2 on lap 12. Thompson passed Herbert shortly after that to take the second spot. The final yellow flag of the race came with 5 to go when Chase Brewer’s 99X came to a halt in turns 3 & 4. As he had on all previous starts and restarts, Holliman pulled to a sizeable lead and held on for the victory. The racers who will make up the inside rows of the A Feature on Sunday are Holliman, Thompson, Herbert, Bubak, Chad Estes, Doug Lovegrove, Jack Dover, John Ricketts and Rodney Henderson.

This was Holliman’s first Precise Racing Products RaceSaver IMCA Sprint Car victory after previously taking the checkers in a 360 sprinter. When asked before the race about his starting spot in the A, Holliman said “The best spot there is! Front row outside!! Go to the high side and hammer down!!!”. He did that from the drop of the green all the way to the end. “The track was really fast. I just put my foot down and held on. I’m glad we even got the show in. Thanks to Roger and the crew for all they did to make tonight happen. I also need to thank my wife and kids, plus the rest of the family. And thanks to those fans who came out tonight. I hope the enjoyed the show. Also, my biggest thanks go to Steve and Amy Hurst for giving me the chance to drive this car”. Holliman’s sponsors include Hurst Lawn Service, Maui Splash, Brahmer Trucking, Holliman Auto Supply, Kustom Sprint Car Supplies, and Wallace Chevrolet of Newton Kansas.

The finale of the evening was for the 600CC Mini-sprints. Jake Galusha’s 15, the 47 of Chipper Wood, Ben Woods in the 11B and the 17J of Jacob Murray were the top 4 on lap 1. Charles Aman’s 35 stopped in turn 3 on lap 2 for a caution. Murray took third on the restart and Dustin Obrien cracked the top 4, putting the 71 into fourth. Obrien slowed and then stopped on lap 8 to slow the action again. That made the top 4 Galusha, Wood, Murray and the 12 of Frank Galusha. Frank Galusha made a huge on the restart, jumping all the way up to second. Jake Galusha slowed and headed pit side with just 8 laps remaining. That put Frank Galusha in the lead and allowed Austin Sheridan’s 1 to move to fourth. Sheridan moved up to third on the restart. The final position change in the top 4 came when Murray again took over fourth. The final top 4 were Frank Galusha, Wood, Sheridan and Murray.

“I am extremely pleased to see so many mini-sprints show up for this show. When we started, the car wouldn’t really run. But on that restart the cars kind of parted and I just drove right up the middle to second. I didn’t have anything for my cousin Jake, but he fell out and gave me the lead. I really only had a second place car. I hope that the next time I get back to Eagle that I’m in one of those sprints!” Galusha said. Galusha’s sponsors include Metric Cycle Racing Engines, Cornhusker Chiropractic, Driven Performance, Gary’s Auto Sales, Hoosier Tires, Kyzer Wheels, Bully Brand and his parents.
